Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Ronseal Eco Range?
A.

Ronseal Eco is a range of Interior and Exterior woodcare products that offer superior protection and enhancement compared to standard woodcare products. They are more durable than standard products and help you to enjoy the wood in your home for longer, which means we can enjoy our forests for longer.

Q. What's different about it?
A.

Wherever possible, Ronseal have used resins based on Castor or Linseed Oil to replace as much of the crude oil-derived materials (petrochemicals) as possible. These oils increase the level of renewable and sustainable resources used in the products as well as delivering improved performance when compared with standard woodcare products. All the products in the Ronseal Eco range are waterbased which means all the products have low VOC levels.

Q. What are petrochemicals?
A.

Petrochemicals are chemical products manufactured using raw materials of petroleum origin. These raw materials are produced from crude oil and include a wide range of chemicals, including ethylene and benzene.

Solvent-based paints or varnishes (sometimes known as oil-based) use a petroleum solvent (e.g. white spirit) as the 'vehicle'. The solvent is used to control the viscosity, flow and drying characteristics of the paint or varnish.

Replacing many of these non-sustainable petrochemicals with sustainable and renewable natural plant oils reduces the amount of chemicals used and means that our oil reserves will be less affected.

Q. What are VOCs?
A.

Volatile Organic Compounds are materials which evaporate readily from sources such as vehicle exhausts, cleaning agents, furniture polish and fabric softeners - as well as solvents used in paints, varnishes, thinners and brush cleaners. In the presence of sunlight, VOCs contribute to atmospheric pollution by reacting with nitrogen oxides to create ground level ozone and photochemical smogs.

Using products with lower VOC levels such as Ronseal Eco will help reduce the amount of potentially harmful pollution in the wider environment.

Q. Why is it better for the environment?
A.

The production of Ronseal Eco, both in sourcing and manufacture, is managed as ethically and responsibly as possible.

The Castor Oil and Linseed Oil used in the resin systems are extracted from crops grown in their natural habitat such as North America and India and are therefore fully sustainable and renewable. They are GMO-free and do not negatively impact on local food sources.

The production and purification process of plant oil products use less energy and water than the production processes of petrochemical-based acrylic products, as demonstrated below:

The production process of the Castor & Linseed Oil resin:
Harvesting, crushing, refining and partial dehydration

The production process of petrochemical resins:
Crude oil drilling, refining, cracking, thermal oxidisation, esterfication and distillation

Q. What about the packaging?
A.

Ronseal Eco Varnish, Eco Floor Varnish, Eco Hardwood Garden Furniture Oil, Eco Decking Stain and Eco Shed & Fence Preserver are all packaged in a steel tin which contains up to 40% recycled material and is 100% recyclable.

Q. What should I do with any leftover product?
A.

Dispose of your left over product safely using facilities provided by your local authority. Please contact your local authority's offices directly for more information.
